Reading Comprehension (RC): पहले Questions, फिर Scan – Old Questions & Strategy
Passage 1: Classics and Modern Society
Q1. What will happen if the subtle charm of a classic is lost?
- (a) Young readers will find it more interesting.
- (b) Young readers will see little reason to explore the classic.
- (c) The classic will become more popular.
- (d) The classic’s beauty will be enhanced.
Q2. Which of the following is the need of society according to the passage?
- (a) Needlessly lurid prose.
- (b) Entertainment that broadens the consumer’s horizons.
- (c) Modifications to make classics more ‘accessible’.
- (d) Corrupting literary works to make them ‘current’.
Q3. The “classics” in the passage are understood as works of:
- (a) Contemporary and popular fiction.
- (b) Enduring excellence, judged over time.
- (c) Simple and easy-to-read stories.
- (d) Works that need to be constantly modified.
“Classics are works of enduring excellence, judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality. The world they recreate serves as an anchor to the past, preventing us from deviating too far from the values, traditions and morals that have come to define the best of human society. If making a literary work more ‘current’ involves corrupting it, should we not think twice about doing so? Modern society may already have hit rock bottom, there is no need to dig deeper and erode the little decency that remains. And what is the use of making a classic more ‘accessible’ if it results in losing the subtle charm, appeal, and charisma of the original? If the magic is lost, the young reader today will see little reason to explore the classic anyway. And the claim that the modifications will preserve the original’s beauty doesn’t seem convincing. This is not to say that the classics are devoid of sensuality. However, it is conveyed through subtlety, delicacy and restraint-where what is not said is just as important as what is, and where good taste and decency triumphs over needlessly lurid prose. This is something that society today needs more of meaningful entertainment that broadens the consumer’s horizons and improves his outlook. Otherwise, all sense and sensibility will be gone with the wind!.”
Passage 2: Leadership and Double Standards
Q1. What becomes the vital part of top management?
- (a) Practicing opulence.
- (b) Preaching austerity.
- (c) Leading by precedents.
- (d) Embracing sycophantic attributes.
Q2. What are the leaders doing instead of what they should do?
- (a) They are preaching austerity but practicing opulence.
- (b) They are leading by example.
- (c) They are respecting their employees.
- (d) They are following the law of nature.
Q3. In what does the double standard adopted by the management result?
- (a) Principled conduct from employees.
- (b) A progressive edifice.
- (c) Mounting insecurities and sycophantic attributes.
- (d) Right conduct practiced by half.
“The basic culture of the company flows top down. And therefore, it becomes paramount on the part of the top management to lead by precedents. If you look around, there is a severe dearth of leaders who talk and talk the walk. We often see leaders openly preaching austerity but practicing opulence with nauseating disesteem in the constraint of their four walls. ‘You reap what you sow’ is the law of nature. By sowing double standards, you cannot expect principled conduct from your employees. A majority of the people fall prey to mounting insecurities as they climb up the ladder of success, that is why the basis of people management is totally forgotten and sycophantic attributes are embraced with impunity. It is a known fact that right conduct is practiced by half while wrong actions are espoused manifold. Employers need to respect their employees and have to be compassionate towards them; only then can you create the progressive edifice.”

- (a) A willingness to learn continuously.
- (b) A degree from a league of institution.
- (c) They are very objective.
- (d) They can modify what they learn.
“In my opinion, it is all about the skills that one possesses rather than merely a qualification or some league of institution that one has studied in. One’s thirst for knowledge is another crucial factor. People who succeed in their careers are inquisitive souls who are always in a quest for finding answers. They want to know more, look up information, ask people who know it better and get it right. A willingness to learn continuously is another common trait found in most successful people. Knowledge can be objective and it is mainly about being informed. Learning is a process and it can happen in any environment, whether or not related to what a person does at the workplace. Moreover, the mark of a good learner is that he/she can modify and customize what is learned. The next step involves balancing empathy and assertiveness make great strides in their career and life.”

- Extreme Language: ‘Always’, ‘Never’, ‘Only’ वाले options आमतौर पर गलत होते हैं।
- Outside Knowledge:
